13. What is a paint?

Paint is a substance which applied to the surface creates a protective, decorative or special coat. The basic function of paint is to protect the coated surface against weather, chemical, biological and mechanical factors.
Paints include different ingredients: paint vehicles, film-forming substances, resins, pigments, dyes, plasticizers, additional substances (preservatives, substances to delay drying etc.) and volatile ingredients, i.e. solvents and diluents. Diluents give viscosity to paint. Film-forming substances bind pigments and are capable of forming coats, resins increase the hardness of coat and plasticizers increase its flexibility.
